Tri-City’s Top Line Leads the Charge in 5–2 Win

Tri-City’s top line did all the scoring Friday night, powering the Americans to a 5–2 win over the Vancouver Giants to kick off a six-game homestand in style as Savin Virk, Gavin Garland, and Connor Dale all combined for ten points.

1st Period

It took just 48 seconds for the Americans to get the game’s opening goal. When scoring first, the Americans were 3-0 entering the night.

Savin Virk gained the Vancouver line and backhanded a pass over to Gavin Garland, who was driving hard toward the net. Garland handled the feed and snapped a wrist shot in.

By the first media timeout, eight minutes in, Tri-City had held Vancouver without a single shot — the second straight game in which the American’s have held their opponent shotless through the first eight minutes.

Americans head coach Jody Hull spoke about the team’s improved starts.

“Early in the season, our starts we’re a bit of our nemesis, right? So, I think we’re just finding ways now to come out of the gate a little bit better, and you know also confidence and getting some wins and stuff like that makes a big difference, and y’know hopefully we can just keep rolling along.”

Vancouver took control in the second half of the period and tied the game 10:20 in on their first shot of the night.

Marek Howell, from the left circle, made a slick move to get past Mason Mykichuk and into the slot before firing a shot glove side on Ryan Grout.

Five minutes later, the dangerous Cameron Schmidt scored his 12th goal of the season to give Vancouver its only lead of the night.

Aaron Obofaifo connected with Schmidt on a stretch pass, and Schmidt broke free on a breakaway, again picking his spot glove side on Grout.

After the game, Hull discussed his approach to defending top talent like Schmidt.

“There really was not a gameplan to stop Schmidt, the only thing I really like to do is match lines. At the end of the day, if every line plays the way we’re capable of playing, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing against, you should be able to shut them down. So that’s why we have those systems in place.”

Tri-City tied the game in the dying seconds of the first period, beginning a stretch of four unanswered goals.

On the power play, Connor Dale fired a shot from the left circle that was stopped, but Crew Martinson crashed the net and tapped in the rebound for his second goal of the year.

Entering the night, Tri-City’s power play sat at 18%, and Hull said it had been a focus in practice that week.

“Yeah we addressed the power play this week a couple times in practice this week and it was nice for, you know, for them to get rewarded on the power play.”

2nd Period

The second period proved to be low scoring as both teams tightened up defensively.

Early on, Tri-City generated a flurry of chances, including a three-on-one opportunity that was denied by Giants netminder Burke Hoode.

After a strong play by overage forward Connor Dale — who finished the night with four assists — the Americans regained the lead and never looked back.

Dale narrowly kept the puck onside after being knocked down, then used his speed to charge toward the net. Just before reaching the crease, he slid the puck over to Virk in the right circle, who fired it past the outstretched Hoode.

3rd Period

Tri-City carried a 3–2 lead into the final frame, looking to close out the game — something they had struggled with earlier in the season.

Hull praised his team’s effort down the stretch.

“I challenged the guys during the second intermission, because we have had an’ issue with closing out games in the third and they responded tonight, which was nice to see.”

The Americans did just that. Jaxen Adam added a highlight-reel goal midway through the third to extend the lead to two.

Adam, at the left point, made a spin move to shake off a Vancouver defender and drive toward the net. After fanning on his first shot attempt, he recovered the puck and beat Hoode blocker side on the second try.

Savin Virk sealed the win with an empty-netter, his second goal of the night, with just 1.8 seconds remaining, sending Tri-City fans home happy and on their first trip to Burger Ranch this season.

Postgame / What’s Next

With the victory, Tri-City improved to 7–7–1 and will face the Prince Albert Raiders next — the WHL’s last remaining team without a regulation loss.

Connor Dale’s four-assist performance set a new career high, while Savin Virk’s two goals and two assists earned him the game’s first star.

With defenseman Aden Bouchard away at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge representing Canada, blueliner David Byrne, who scored his first WHL goal last weekend, has seen increased ice time.

Hull had high praise for Byrne, comparing him to a former American’s defenseman.

“His skating ability, he’s a really good skater, so he’s able to skate himself out of trouble. As similar to Jackson Smith last year a little bit, able to skate the puck out of the zone. He’s really smart and he’s a guy that’s low maintenance. He just works hard in practice, off the ice, and does what he’s asked of in games, and at the end of the day that’s all the coaches really want.”

Hull also looked ahead to the matchup with Prince Albert tomorrow night who will enter the game with a 12-0-3 record.

“It’s gonna be a tough game. They’re a good skating club, they kind of play a high skill level game, and you know our hands will be full tomorrow, but we just have to be ready to work and grind.”
