Tri-City Drops Fourth Straight in 4-1 Road Loss to Seattle

Tri-City entered Seattle looking to end their struggles in the accesso ShoWare Center and snap a three-game losing streak. Unfortunately for the Americans, both problems persisted. Tri-City dropped their fourth straight game and continue to slide in the standings at a critical point in the season with a 4-1 loss to Seattle after Antonio Martorana and Cameron Schmidt both struck twice for the Thunderbirds.

First Period

One thing Tri-City had been searching for over the past few games was a strong start. Two minutes in, they appeared to find one, generating early shots and a few quality looks. However, as the period wore on, the tide shifted in Seattle’s favor.

The Thunderbirds struck first with 7:37 remaining in the period. After a long shot from Gramer, Antonio Martorana delivered a perfect deflection that sailed into the top corner past Xavier Wendt, giving Seattle a 1-0 lead.

Late in the period, Tri-City had a golden opportunity shorthanded. Savin Virk broke in alone but was pressured from behind by Brock England and couldn’t get a clean look before being turned aside by Grayson Malinoski.

Tri-City had another excellent chance shortly after. Garland wrapped the puck around behind the Seattle net and fed a perfect pass to Cruz Pavao for what looked like a wide-open tap-in, but Pavao couldn’t pull the trigger, and Seattle preserved the 1-0 advantage.

Despite leading in shots 6-5 early, Seattle finished the period dominating play. They outshot Tri-City 17-7 in the opening frame and took a 1-0 lead into intermission. The Americans had their chances — they just couldn’t capitalize.

Second Period

The second period got off to the worst possible start for Tri-City. Just 17 seconds in, Cameron Schmidt scored his 37th goal of the season to extend Seattle’s lead to 2-0.

To their credit, the Americans responded quickly. Less than two minutes later, a point shot from Jaxen Adam was tipped at the last second by Jesse McKinnon, who found the back of the net to make it 2-1. It was McKinnon’s third goal of the season and his second against Seattle — a much-needed spark.

But momentum wouldn’t last.

A Tomas Racz tripping penalty proved costly, as Seattle converted on the power play to restore their two-goal advantage. Schmidt struck again, netting his second of the night and continuing to terrorize the Americans.

Rookie defenseman Aden Bouchard made a key defensive play midway through the period, getting his stick on a rebound attempt to prevent a Schmidt hat trick and keep the game from slipping further out of reach.

Malinoski closed the period strong with a sharp save on Connor Dale in the final seconds, and Seattle carried a 3-1 lead into the third. Tri-City appeared to lack energy for much of the night — and the absence of Cash Koch was clearly felt.

Third Period

Entering the final frame, Tri-City had a tall task ahead. Over the last five years, they have struggled mightily at the Accesso ShoWare Center, entering the night 3-13-1 in that span.

They had a great chance six minutes into the third to cut into the deficit but came up empty once again.

With eight minutes remaining, Martorana effectively sealed the game. He tipped in his second goal of the night in front of the net, pushing Seattle’s lead to 4-1. The combined four goals from Martorana and Schmidt proved far too much for a Tri-City offense that struggled to generate sustained pressure.

Seattle closed things out from there, and Tri-City’s struggles in this building continued.

Final score: 4-1 Seattle.

Post Game / What’s Next

Tri-City has now dropped four straight games and sits at 25-22-3-1 on the season. Just a month ago, they were battling for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Now, they’re fighting for their playoff lives.

The Americans sit seventh in the Western Conference, just three points ahead of Spokane, who currently sit ninth and outside of a playoff spot.

Cash Koch, who was recently downgraded to week-to-week after suffering a concussion against Brandon, remains a significant absence. His energy and presence have clearly been missed during this skid.

Savin Virk appeared in his 100th career WHL game after recently missing time with a lower-body injury. Connor Dale remains stuck on 99 career WHL points after being held off the scoresheet once again.

Despite the loss, Xavier Wendt kept the game from getting completely out of hand, turning aside 32 shots in a solid effort.

Tri-City will look to salvage a split in the home-and-home series tomorrow night at 6:05 PM back on home ice.
