Another slow start proved costly for Tri-City once again, as the Americans fell behind 3–0 in the first period for the second straight game and ultimately dropped a 5–3 decision to the Penticton Vees.
First Period
Tri-City’s struggles to start on time continued, and Penticton wasted no time capitalizing. Just over a minute into the game, the Vees opened the scoring on one of their first shots, immediately putting Tri-City on its heels.
Penticton doubled the lead just under six minutes in, and the start was quickly slipping away from the Americans. Jacob Kvasnicka scored from a sharp angle along the bottom of the right faceoff circle, picking the top corner over the shoulder of Tri-City goaltender Ryan Grout to make it 2–0.
Things went from bad to worse when Tri-City failed to clear the puck in their own zone. Defenseman Jaxen Adam had time to make a play but attempted to bank it up the boards, only for Penticton to intercept and capitalize. Kvasnicka struck again, his second of the night, giving the Vees a 3–0 lead before the nine-minute mark — the second straight night Tri-City trailed by three in the opening period.
Tri-City came close to getting on the board when Gavin Garland rang a shot off the crossbar from the faceoff circle, but the puck stayed out.
With just 40 seconds remaining in the period, the Americans finally found life. After a Penticton turnover at the Tri-City blue line, Cruz Pavao floated the puck ahead to Connor Dale, who broke in alone. Dale’s initial attempt was stopped, but he followed up and buried the rebound beside the net.
Despite the late goal, it was another disappointing opening frame for Tri-City, and Penticton took a 3–1 lead into the second period. Shots were 10–9 in favor of Tri-City.
Second Period
Tri-City generated a few good looks early in the middle frame and had chances to cut into the deficit, but it was Penticton that struck next. An odd bounce off Jakub Vanecek found its way into the net, extending the Vees’ lead to 4–1.
Following multiple Tri-City power plays, Penticton nearly put the game away when Brady Birnie found himself with a wide-open net from the side of the net, only to somehow hit the crossbar.
Play went back and forth late in the period, but the score remained 4–1 through two. Tri-City still had a steep hill to climb, though their third-period comeback effort from last Sunday offered a glimmer of hope.
Third Period
The third period was Tri-City’s best of the night, as the Americans showed pushback and turned it into a competitive finish.
At 11:08 remaining, a crisp passing sequence just after the expiration of a power play brought Tri-City within two. Gavin Garland found Grady Martin at the back door for a tap-in on what was Tri-City’s first shot of the period, making it 4–2.
Moments later, Connor Dale drew a hooking penalty on Callum Stone as he worked his way down the left wing, setting up Tri-City’s fourth power play of the night.
Dale delivered again, scoring his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to one and give the Americans real momentum. It marked Dale’s second consecutive two-goal performance.
However, just as the tide was turning, a costly turnover at the Tri-City blue line swung momentum right back to Penticton. Ryder Evers capitalized to restore the two-goal cushion, a backbreaking tally that sealed the result as the Vees closed out the game.
Postgame / What’s Next
Tri-City dropped its second straight game with the 5–3 loss, despite an encouraging third-period effort. The Americans now sit at 25-20-3-1 on the season and are 0-3 against Penticton this year.
On the power play, Tri-City finished 1-for-4, while Penticton went 0-for-1. Shots were dead even at 28–28. Ethan McCallum stopped 25 of 28 shots for Penticton, while Ryan Grout made 23 saves in the loss.
Connor Dale’s second goal of the night leaves him just one point shy of 100 in his WHL career — a milestone he’ll look to reach tomorrow night.
It’s been a season-long talking point, and it remains clear: Tri-City must find a way to start games on time and avoid playing catch-up. The Americans will get an immediate chance at redemption in the rematch against Penticton tomorrow night at 6:05 PM at home, during the annual Pink Ice Night.
