Whitecaps display “next man up” mentality against Sporting KC

The Vancouver Whitecaps traveled to the Midwest to compete against Sporting Kansas City.

The team faced significant injury challenges. All-Star centreback Tristan Blackmon sustained an MCL injury against Forge. The club anticipates his return before the MLS Cup Playoffs. All-Star striker Brian White remained sidelined with a hamstring injury. Although he was cleared for contact and participated fully in first-team training, captain Ryan Gauld was not yet ready to return from his knee capsule injury.

Recent acquisitions Sebastian Schonlau (Achilles injury) and Joedrick Pupe (hamstring injury) were also unavailable due to injuries. Additionally, key signing Thomas Müller sustained an adductor injury, although his status was considered day to day.

Vancouver has demonstrated resilience throughout the season, managing injuries, extensive travel, international call-ups, and illness during 2025. Despite the absence of several key players, the Whitecaps secured a victory in Kansas City—a win that exemplified their ability to adapt.

Next man up mentality prevails again

The Whitecaps wasted no time getting on the board. Emmanuel Sabbi made the run, and Ocampo overlapped. Once the Colombian received the pass, he made no mistake. It only took 90 seconds for Vancouver to silence the Children’s Mercy Park crowd.

“Next man up” mentality was something Sabbi spoke about during after the Whitecaps beat Philadelphia 7-0 when asked about the depth of the squad. Sebastian Berhalter spoke about that as well after Wednesday’s win over Forge.

The next man up mentality continued. Kenji Cabrera was making his first Whitecaps start. He was slotted in behind striker Daniel Rios as the number 10, which is usually Müller’s position. It’s safe to say that Cabrera stepped up and filled the void perfectly.

He was very creative and quick. After ringing a shot off the post in the first half, the Peruvian international got his first goal as a Whitecap. After a nice give and go with Ali Ahmed, Cabrera got around Zorhan Bassong and his shot went off Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper John Pulskamp.

Building on their strong start, the Whitecaps pressed Kansas City throughout the first half. With Cabrera’s creativity in the 10 role and Ahmed and Sabbi threatening on the wings, it felt like one-way traffic yet again.

After halftime, the momentum shifted as Sporting KC began to get back into the game. The Whitecaps struggled to advance and found themselves under pressure from Kansas City in their own half, becoming too passive with the ball.

However, the backline stood tall. Belal Halbouni, in particular, was making people forget that Vancouver was missing four centre-backs. It felt like he multiplied himself into four centre-backs at times. Halbouni was strong and defensively sound all game.

He made this incredible tackle on Erik Thommy late in the game. That ultimately preserved the clean sheet.

Speaking of clean sheets, that was Yohei Takaoka’s 13th clean sheet of the season. No goalkeeper in MLS has more. The Japanese goalkeeper was credited with only one save in the game, but it was a big one as it was from a bullet of a free kick by Thommy.

In the end, the Whitecaps did their job and got it done. Next man up mentality once again prevailed.

Stat of the match

According to Har Johal of Daily Hive, the Whitecaps have not conceded a goal in 236 minutes. They have outscored their opponents 15-0 in that time span. St. Louis City SC’s Joao Klauss was the last player to score against Vancouver.

What was said

“We scored the first goal quite early and that helped us settle into the game very fast,” said Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen after the match. “I think we had some very good attacks. We played very good football in the first half. The second half, we played not the most clever game. We didn’t play with enough quality on the ball and didn’t do well enough in the second half going forward…we didn’t have much control in the second half, but it’s always difficult to play away, and it’s been a while. Overall, I’m pleased with the result.”

“I think it’s been a theme for us this year,” said Ahmed when asked about the next man up mentality. “Everybody, when their name has been called, from Rayan (Elloumi), to Jeevan (Badwal), to Belal (Halbouni)…Some quality and long-time experienced guys are going down, and some inexperienced guys are coming in and looking like they’ve been here before. It’s a big reason why we’re where at in this time of year. With guys going down, it’s not easy to win on the road; we did a great job of it today.”

Wrap-up

The Whitecaps set a couple of MLS-era club records in this game.

With the win, they now have 54 points. That surpasses the 53 points they achieved in 2015. Vancouver has also scored 56 goals this season, and that breaks the previous record from 2023. The Whitecaps have also tied their record in wins of the season with 16. 2015 was also the year they accomplished that.

The Whitecaps currently sit in second place in the Western Conference with 54 points, just two points behind San Diego FC. San Diego and third-place Minnesota United both lost on Saturday.

Vancouver faces the Portland Timbers next. That game is on Wednesday at BC Place, and kickoff is at 7:30 pm Pacific. The Whitecaps can reclaim the Western Conference lead and also win a record eighth Cascadia Cup.
