With Thomas Müller now official, it is MLS Cup or bust for Whitecaps

On Wednesday morning, the Vancouver Whitecaps made history. The Raumdeuter, Thomas Müller, was officially announced. The Bayern Munich and German legend will arrive in Vancouver next Wednesday. He will train and be unveiled the following day.

Müller’s numbers speak for themselves. He has won the Bundesliga 13 times, the UEFA Champions League twice, and the FIFA Club World Cup twice. Müller was also a key player in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning team. The Raumdeuter spent his entire career up to this point playing for FC Bayern Munich. In Bavaria, he has appeared in 756 matches across all competitions (a club record) and has scored 250 goals and tallied 238 assists.

He fits in well tactically with the Whitecaps and makes them MLS Cup contenders. It is hard to believe that Müller is officially a Whitecap. Is this real life, or is this just fantasy? Whitecaps fans are caught in a landslide and surely don’t want to escape from this reality. Open your eyes and look up to the sky (or rather X or BlueSky or any social media platform) and see…

No, this isn’t AI-generated. This is 100% real.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” said Müller in the official press release. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost, I’m coming to win. I’ve had great conversations with (Sporting director and CEO) Axel Schuster and (Head coach) Jesper Sørensen, and now I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs.”

MLS Cup or bust for the Whitecaps

For years, the bar was pretty low for the Whitecaps. That was due to underwhelming signings, disappointing playoff appearances and lots of losing.

But Vancouver has been a steadily rising team in MLS for the past three to four years. The club has won three straight Canadian Championships and made the playoffs in three out of the last four seasons. The Whitecaps also advanced to their first-ever CONCACAF Champions Cup final this year and are already set on breaking club records of their MLS era.

However, the team has fallen short in the playoffs. For the past two seasons, the Whitecaps have been knocked out of the first round by LAFC. (Who bulked up by signing Heung-Min Son) Vancouver was seen as a good team in MLS, but not an elite one. The main core of Ryan Gauld (Still injured but is training with teammates but still unknown when he will return), Andres Cubas, Brian White and Ranko Vesenlinovic (He is unfortunately out for the season with an ACL tear) have been supported by the likes of Tristan Blackmon, Mathias Laborda, Edier Ocampo, Sebastian Berhalter, Jayden Nelson and Ali Ahmed this season.

Now they are adding Müller: One of the best players of this generation, one of the most decorated players of all time, a leader and a great character. This has felt like a dream season for the Whitecaps and their fans. Adding Müller to this squad has Whitecaps fans dreaming even more.

If the MLS Cup window for Vancouver was open before Müller was signed, he has now knocked the sill off and drafts are coming in. This year has the potential to be very special. With Müller soon to be onboard and hopefully a new centre-back coming in, the Whitecaps look dangerous. They have proven they are one of MLS’s best, along with the likes of LAFC, San Diego FC, Seattle Sounders, FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew, Philadelphia Union and Inter Miami.

The bar is no longer at the centre of the Earth. It isn’t even on the ground or at the height of a tree. The bar for the Whitecaps is so high right now that it has reached outer space.

With Müller and his ability to find and exploit space, Vancouver has to go for the MLS Cup. At this point, anything less than lifting the MLS Cup in December is considered a failure. The Whitecaps also have a chance to win their fourth straight Canadian Championship and win their first MLS Supporters Shield.

Only one team in MLS history has won all three and that was Toronto FC in 2017. With the season being a grind, it is a tough task, but doable.

When will Müller make his debut?

The Whitecaps get back in action after their bye week this Saturday. They travel to the Bay Area to face the San Jose Earthquakes. As mentioned, Müller arrives in Vancouver next Wednesday and will be unveiled the following day.

Müller confirmed with OneSoccer that August 17 will be his debut. The Whitecaps are playing the Houston Dynamo at BC Place. Grab your tickets while you still can! It is an exciting time to support the Whitecaps.
