The constantly discussed brotherhood within Canada’s MNT is being showcased on the pitch.
The Canadian men defeated Wales 1-0 on a wet day in Swansea, sealing back-to-back wins on European soil for the first time in their history.
Derek Cornelius’s wonder strike in the first half was all that was required as Canada defeated the 31st-ranked FIFA men’s team, just three spots below the visitors.
After a frenetic 15-minute opening period, where Canada was able to play their free-flowing style, the match transitioned into more of a tactical chess match.
But other than a big save for Dayne St. Clair midway through the half, it was Canada with the bulk of quality chances.
Ismaël Koné hit the post as he got onto the end of some beautiful passing build-up, and Richie Laryea put a shot across the face of the Welsh goal with a great run to cut inside from the left.
Canada took the lead with a late first-half goal. Cornelius’s free kick from 30 yards out sailed over Welsh goalkeeper Adam Davies, capping off a half where Canada had chances, but Wales had the majority of possession.
The second half continued much as the first had ended. Canada kept finding opportunities with their limited possession, as Wales held the bulk of possession.
Wales did find chances, particularly through Mark Harris. Harris’s overhead kick seemed destined for goal, save for the smartly positioned Luc de Fougerolles, who was able to clear it off the line.
Yet Canada’s backline held, and Wales were unable to find any purchase within the 90 minutes.
Canada looks forward to the World Cup
There are a few names on Canada’s roster that are considered locks for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, including players who were not part of this window due to injury.
Alphonso Davies and Alistair Johnston in particular stand out in that list. However, more than a few younger players continue to impress and are giving Jesse Marsch difficult questions.
Niko Sigur has moved from strength to strength not only as a capable right back but also in the midfield. Nathan Saliba still has a few mistakes to remove from his game, but they are few and far between when compared to what he does right.
And were it not for the aforementioned Davies, Ali Ahmed could be considered a lock at the left wing.
But these are good questions for Marsch to have. Player depth was the issue during Canada’s last World Cup in Qatar.
It should not be now.
