The Vancouver Whitecaps came to Calgary with a commanding 4-1 lead.
They did so with the win over Cavalry at Swangard Stadium in the first leg. Now Jesper Sørensen’s men had to finish the job at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows. They knew they couldn’t get complacent.
With some changes from the first leg, Vancouver wanted to prove that their depth could once again get the job done.
It wasn’t a pretty performance, but they did get the job done.
First half: Lack of finish from both teams
Cavalry came out with some urgency early. They knew it was now or never. Ali Musse nearly got the fans on their feet, but Isaac Boehmer made a smart save.
It was a physical affair early on. Mathias Laborda was booked less than two minutes in for a rough tackle in which he didn’t get the ball. However, Cavalry’s Bradley Kandem made a similar tackle on Jeevan Badwal. Kandem didn’t get a yellow. Hmm…
The Whitecaps then used their possession and pressing. Tate Johnson and Nikola Djordevic were playing as the overloads on the left. Badwal and Ocampo were connecting on the right, with the latter cutting inside. Thomas Müller was doing his best to find space and was sending in through balls.
The 2014 World Cup winner nearly set up Ocampo for the opening goal. But the shot went off Cavalry defender Amer Didic and off the fingertips of the goalkeeper Nathan Ingham.
Müller later set up Badwal for a great chance, but he too was denied by Ingham.
The Whitecaps were doing well with the ball in the first half, but needed to be more clinical. Meanwhile, Boehmer made some crucial saves. Vancouver was doing a good job of making the tie out of reach for Cavalry.
Second half: Whitecaps go down, but Gherasimencov seals the deal
The ‘Caps knew they didn’t have to do anything erratic. They kept it simple in the second half: Press and keep the ball.
Vancouver was doing a good job of that. Cavalry had trouble getting out of their own half. Well, that was until the 56th minute when Musse got behind the Whitecaps’ backline. You would think he would’ve scored, but he missed wide of the right post. What a shocking miss this was.
10 minutes later, Tobias Warchewski played a great ball across the box for Goteh Ntignee. But the Cavalry left winger couldn’t get the ball on target.
Bruno Caicedo and Ryan Gauld were brought on for Badwal and Müller. But Vancouver still had trouble with the final ball. Caicedo had trouble completing passes.
Cavalry were the ones who broke the deadlock. Harry Paton balled the ball across the box, and Musse headed it past Boehmer. Nothing the Canadian goalkeeper could’ve done there. Musse was also left unmarked.
Cavalry tried to make things interesting. But the Whitecaps managed to seal it. Substitute Mihail Gherasimencov was making his return to Spruce Meadows. He spent the 2025 season on loan at Cavalry. The Moldovan international scored a left-footed screamer past Ingham. Gherasimencov wrapped the bow on this tie and didn’t celebrate out of respect for Cavalry.
Sure, the Whitecaps were wasteful, and it wasn’t the best night for the centre-backs, but they took care of business. They will face CF Montreal in the Canadian Championship semi-finals.

Ngando got the assist on the Gherasimencov goal, and his 67 completed passes were the most out of anyone in the game.

Wrap-up
On Thursday, it is back to MLS action for the Whitecaps. They will travel to Chicago to face the Fire. Chicago has made headlines recently as it signed Robert Lewandowski, one of the greatest strikers of all time. It is likely that Lewandowski will make his debut against Vancouver.
Müller and Lewandowski spent eight years together at Bayern Munich, which included 228 Bundesliga appearances together. The two of them had great chemistry and led Bayern to eight straight Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2020. On Thursday, the two of them will likely face each other as MLS opponents. Kickoff from Soldier Field is at 5:30 pm Pacific.
The Whitecaps currently sit first in the Western Conference and look to continue that momentum after the World Cup break. They look to push for the Supporters Shield and another deep MLS Cup Playoff run. It all begins on Thursday.
