Whitecaps clinch MLS Playoff spot in gritty draw with LAFC

After a dismal midweek showing, the Vancouver Whitecaps bounced back with a gritty performance against LAFC, resulting in a 1-1 draw which saw them play most of the match down a man.

Tristan Blackmon was given his walking orders early on, but a first Whitecaps goal from Oliver Larraz ensured they came away with a point.

Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen said it was an “amazing” performance.

“I think that the players left everything on the pitch,” he said. “But also, we played with the courage I want us to play with. We have a strong identity as a team…that’s what we have to keep and remind ourselves.”

The Whitecaps went into this match with high hopes, knowing LAFC had won only one of their last ten. But any plan Sørensen had for the match was quickly thrown out the window.

Blackmon brought down Jacob Shaffelburg in the 6th minute in a clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity (DOGSO). Referee Guido Gonzales Jr. was quick to reach into his pocket and show the centre-back the red card.

But the Whitecaps rebounded well, bringing on Mathías Laborda for Emmanuel Sabbi to cover the defensive hole left by Blackmon. The change kept the structure of the Whitecaps’ shape.

And it still gave the visitors opportunities to go forward. Brian White had an excellent chance in the 22nd minute on a clear break on Hugo Lloris. However, his shot did not provide enough of a test, and the LAFC keeper was easily able to handle it.

At the other end, Son Heung-min’s shot in the 27th minute required a stellar reactionary save from Yohei Takaoka.

The deadlock broke in the 43rd minute on a goal from Larraz. Édier Ocampo’s cross into the 18-yard box was right on the head of the midfielder. The initial attempt was saved, but Larraz followed through and got his own rebound from a sharp angle, roofing it into the net over Lloris.

The lead was short-lived as Denis Bouanga levelled the match within the first minute of the second half. Sergi Palencia’s cross found the head of the LAFC striker, and he powered it in past a flat-footed Takaoka.

LAFC kept pushing for a second goal, but the Whitecaps maintained their strong defensive shape. Still, Takaoka was tested and came up big on several occasions to keep his team in the game.

Neither side was able to grab the extra goal, so they split a point apiece and tossed another away.

The draw was also enough for the Whitecaps to clinch a spot in the 2026 MLS Playoffs as the first club from the Western Conference to gain that honour.

Priso back to form for Whitecaps

Ralph Priso played the full 90 minutes, something he had not done for the Whitecaps since March. He played a full match for Canada in the 1-0 loss to the United States earlier in the week.

“I feel pretty good. It’s been a long season in terms of just being out for a while and not being able to build a rhythm. It’ll be good for me to do that in the run-in towards the playoffs.

It was roughly one year ago that Priso was repurposed into a centre-back due to injuries to key players at the end of the 2025 MLS season. Since then, the Canadian has seen his profile rise dramatically, including being awarded six caps for his country.

Over this year, Priso has had ample time to develop and grow in his new role as a centre-back.

“I think I’ve done well, but I can definitely still do better. I think the USA game with Canada and the moment today that led to Tristan’s red card are examples of things I still have to improve on.”

Up next

The road trip continues with a stop in St. Louis to take on one of the hottest clubs in the league. St. Louis has not lost in league play since May 3.

That match is on Wednesday, October 14. Kick-off is at 5:30 p.m.
