White leads The Way in Whitecaps Win In San Diego

The Vancouver Whitecaps had one more game left until the World Cup break.

It was a rematch of last year’s 2025 Western Conference final as Vancouver travelled to Southern California to face San Diego FC. The Whitecaps, for the most part, maintained the momentum from 2025 and are in a Supporters Shield race and were top of the Western Conference heading into Saturday evening’s match. San Diego had fallen off from their successful inaugural season and sat 10th in the Western Conference heading into the game.

For the Whitecaps, they were missing some bodies. Wingers Emmanuel Sabbi and Cheikh Sabaly were dealing with injuries, and so was midfielder Oliver Larraz. 2025 All-Star goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka was suspended for his red card in the last game against the Houston Dynamo. Andres Cubas was also suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

After losing in Houston, in which head coach Jesper Sørensen was not happy with the second half, the Whitecaps looked to get back on track. It was safe to say that it was mission accomplished.

First half: White gets two

Earl on, the Whitecaps were giving a ton of space to the San Diego attackers. David Vazquez and Andres Dreyer were giving the Vancouver back line fits. However, despite some turnovers and defensive lapses, the ‘Caps prevented San Diego from getting a shot on Isaac Boehmer.

Brian White has been quiet over the past few weeks. But time and time again, he has shown that once he gets going, he is hard to stop. Thomas Müller set up White with a gift on a silver platter, and White buried it past CJ Dos Santos.

Right before halftime, it was White again. AZ started it with his run, and Jeevan Badwal had the flick, and White had his brace. You just can’t get enough of White and scoring goals.

Early in the half, it was Vancouver giving San Diego space; later in the half, it was the other way around. AZ and Cabrera were doing fine down the wings. It also helped that the San Diego defenders kept parting like the Red Sea against them.

It was the best half for the ‘Caps in weeks.

Second half: Whitecaps take care of business

San Diego was not going down quietly, especially with their transitions. They got their early second-half goal on the transition, and Vazquez scored a belter past Boehmer. That game gave the home side momentum.

Tate Johnson was having a battle with Andres Dreyer all game. San Diego was playing with intensity; it was being led by Dreyer. Johnson and Dreyer were battling for the ball with physicality.

Müller was dictating the attack, and he orchestrated the third goal. He and White were in perfect harmony to find Bruno Caicedo, who came off the bench four minutes earlier. Caicedo made no mistake with White’s pass and restored the two-goal lead for the Whitecaps. It was exquisite as the intro of Muse’s Hexagons.

Vancouver got even more of a boost when Luca Bombino received a second yellow and was sent off after an arm to Edier Ocampo’s face. Ralph Priso then entered the match, marking his first appearance since a hamstring injury with Canada in March. Coming off the bench like Caicedo did earlier, Priso made an immediate impact and got on the scoresheet by ensuring White’s header went in. Perhaps Jesse Marsch was writing notes after seeing Priso’s goal. Is a World Cup call-up coming for Priso? It is very possible, especially since Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reported Portland Timbers defender Kamal Miller won’t be called up for Canada.

The ‘Caps kept pushing for more. Dos Santos made a big save off substitute Rayan Elloumi, and Sebastian Berhalter missed a close chance to make it five. San Diego did add a second thanks to Bryan Zamblé in stoppage time, but it was Vancouver who took home the three points.

It was a great performance and exactly what they needed heading into the World Cup break. They stayed classy in San Diego.

Stat of the match

White scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in San Diego. He has reached the double-digit mark in goals in every season he’s been with the Whitecaps except 2022, when he scored only four goals.

Tweet of the match

If this is the end of the road for Berhalter as a Whitecap, it was an incredible ride. He has reportedly been called up to the US team for the World Cup. Depending on how he does at the World Cup, he could sign a contract with a European team before the Whitecaps return from the break, marking a potential transition from Vancouver to Europe.

If he does get sold, Vancouver will get a significant fee. The status of Berhalter’s future in Vancouver will impact what the Whitecaps do in the transfer window.

What was said

“They (San Diego FC) always bring a very difficult challenge because they have such great talents in the build-up,” said Sørensen after the game. “They are so unified with the way they play, especially with the way they play and break through the pressure line. We gave them a little bit of what they want because we believe that’s the way we want to play….Whenever we play them, we will try to take the ball away from them.”

Sørensen was also very happy with Priso coming back and scoring a goal.

“I didn’t see that coming,”said Sørensen. “He took an opportunistic run, and I think in general, he played very well when he came on….He played with great confidence and made some great passes that broke through.”

“I think they made it very difficult for us to press,” said White when asked about San Diego. “They like to keep the ball and have players who are good at the ball. I think the team did well to press as a group, and then when we did, with the ball, we were able to capitalize.”

White was also asked about how he assesses the season for the club heading into the break.

“I think we put ourselves in a really good position,” he said. “Top of the table, and I think there are certain games we can learn from. Some teams will sit in and make it difficult for us. We’re going to need to figure out how we’re going to find those spots in the final third.”

Wrap-up

As it stands, the Whitecaps sit first in the Western Conference and second in the Supporters Shield race with 32 points. That is one behind Nashville SC, who beat New York City FC 2-1 at home on Saturday.

The blue and white do not play until July 8 against Cavalry in the Canadian Championship quarter-final first leg. They will host the first leg at Swangard Stadium. They do not return to MLS play until July 16 in Chicago against the Fire.

The ‘Caps had a good first half of the season and now have some time off. Can the momentum continue in the second half?
