With November now here, many men will be shaving what facial hair they had to grow a mustache in support of men’s health. So since Movember has started, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at some of the best mustaches in every sport. Today we have the top five mustaches in the NFL.
5. Walter Payton
They called him “Sweetness” for a reason. Walter Payton is one of the best running backs in NFL history with the mustache to boot. An incredible 1977 season included MVP, offensive player of the year, rushing leader, touchdown leader, and the man of the year award, which is now named after him. A Super Bowl champion, league record for most consecutive starts at running back. Sweetness was one of the best backs of all time and overall football players.
4. Todd Christensen
The least recognizable name on the list Todd Christensen, was too impressive not to have on here. The Raiders tight end bounced around his first year before landing in California. Rocking the look in the 1970s and 80s while carrying it through into a broadcast career is as iconic as it gets. The three-time all-pro and two-time Super Bowl champion was never selected to the Hall of Fame, but he makes our hall in Movember memories.
3. Gardner Minshew
The most modern option on our list is Gardner Minshew. Even if it’s the hair mixed in with the facial hair no one can doubt the aura surrounding Minshew. Don’t look up his numbers, but the former Washington State QB will always have the reputation for being one of the coolest looking players in NFL history. The social media era gave him a big boost, but drop Gardner in the 1970s and he fits like a glove. Someone with that iconic mullet combined with the beard and/or mustache is transcendent.
2. Andy Reid
Recent success and social media have helped Andy Reid and his ‘stache jump into our top 2. One that gets to celebrate with cheeseburgers after Super Bowls and has the entire internet on its side despite being the coach of the modern dynasty in the NFL. Reid had icicles growing off his upper lip during a playoff game last year against Miami. It’s impossible to picture Reid through his Eagles and Chiefs tenures without anything on his upper lip.
1. Mike Ditka
The most legendary mustache that we have ever seen managed to impress on the field and the sidelines. Mike Ditka as both a tight end and legendary coach, showed us aging gracefully can also involve facial hair. We even saw it continue as he was part of ESPN’s NFL coverage as coach. To manage three generations and keeping a mustache for so long that it may be his most recognizable trait that’s worthy of a number 1 spot.
