Tri-City entered the night at the back end of a four-game B.C. Division road trip, carrying a 2-1 record through the first three games. Last weekend, the Americans swept the Prince George Cougars for the first time since the 2018-19 season, highlighted by two goals from Grady Martin just under two minutes apart on Saturday night.
The last time Tri-City visited Penticton, it was one of their worst performances early in the season. Despite a small window of success in the second period, the Americans were dominated throughout the night in a 4-2 loss.
Unfortunately for Tri-City, it was another frustrating offensive performance in Penticton, as the Americans were shut out 3-0 to close out the road trip.
First Period
Early in the first period, Grady Martin of Tri-City took a run at Tucker Robinson and was assessed a kneeing penalty. Robinson was slow getting to the bench and headed straight down the tunnel, but eventually returned to the game.
Shortly after the power play expired, Penticton would find the opening goal.
Following a three-on-two entry, Cameron Norrie received a cross-ice feed from Jackson Schneider before firing a shot from the left circle for his first goal of the season. It was one Xavier Wendt would likely want back, as the shot beat him high on the blocker side with no traffic.
With just under a minute remaining in the period, Tri-City put together a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing sequence.
David Huk received a backdoor feed, but it was Andrew Reyelts who went post-to-post and extended his pad to make a fantastic save on what looked like a potential tying goal.
Outside of that late opportunity from Huk, it was all Penticton in the opening frame. The Vees carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission and outshot Tri-City 12-5.
Second Period
Tri-City began the second period with an abbreviated power play after Penticton took a late penalty in the opening frame.
The Americans would develop a two-on-one opportunity shortly after, but the play was overshadowed by an unnecessary fight.
Lukasz McIsaac dropped the gloves with Brooks Demmar in the Tri-City end, seemingly unaware of the play developing in front of him. The two exchanged punches before McIsaac eventually fell on top of Demmar. Demmar would not return to the game.
Penticton would capitalize on a beautiful saucer pass from Gavin Katz to extend its lead to 2-0.
Tyden Bergenson did an excellent job corralling the pass before cutting in along the left wing and finishing on the backhand around a sprawled-out Xavier Wendt.
The game began to open up midway through the period, with both teams generating better opportunities.
Penticton nearly found a backbreaking third goal, but Wendt came up with a tremendous backdoor save on Nate Pederson to keep the deficit at two.
Shortly after, Lukas Lima broke in on a breakaway for Tri-City and nearly brought the Americans within one. Lima deked out Vees goaltender Andrew Reyelts but couldn’t get enough lift on the puck to finish, and the score remained 2-0.
That would do it for the second period, leaving Tri-City with plenty of work to do heading into the final 20 minutes.
Third Period
In the third, Penticton would take care of business.
Xavier Wendt continued to impress early in the third period, keeping Tri-City within striking distance. Wendt made two fabulous stops that even drew audible reactions from the Penticton crowd.
However, his efforts would ultimately go unrewarded.
Following some sloppy play and a turnover in their own end, the Americans surrendered a third goal that would effectively seal the game.
Carter Cunningham fired a shot from the high slot that appeared harmless, but the puck trickled around Wendt’s pad and into the net to make it 3-0. It was another goal Wendt would likely have wanted back.
Late in the third period, things began to get out of control.
Wendt was run over after Tri-City defenseman Caden Campion nudged Vees forward Tyler Deakos into the Americans goaltender. Jaxen Adam took exception to the collision and went after several Penticton players, throwing wild punches before being ejected from the game.
Adam will most certainly be getting a call from the league after that.
That would bring the action to a close, as Penticton cruised to a 3-0 victory in a game where Tri-City struggled to generate much of anything offensively.
Postgame / What’s Next
Following the shutout loss, Tri-City falls to 6-7-1 on the season.
Xavier Wendt was one of the few bright spots for the Americans on the night, making 24 saves and keeping Tri-City in it with some great saves.
Offensively, the Americans struggled to generate opportunities once again. Tri-City failed to record more than eight shots in any period. During their previous visit to Penticton, the Americans were held to just 15 shots. This time, they managed only 18.
The Americans, who entered the game with the 18th-ranked power play, also struggled with the man advantage, going 0-for-5 on the night.
Andrew Reyelts earned the shutout for Penticton and was named the game’s first star. It was Reyelts first shutout of the season and the fourth of his career.
Tri-City will now return home for a Halloween night matchup against the Medicine Hat Tigers, featuring the Ruck twins, with puck drop scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
