After Jaxen Adam returned from Tampa Bay Lightning Camp and looking to begin his third full season in the WHL, he had a surprise waiting for him.
Adam was named the 36th captain in Tri-City Americans history, an honor he found out about just days before the announcement.
“I found out a couple days ago, they pulled me in and told me, obviously super exciting. It’s a big honor and really a privilege to be a captain. They told the team a day after, and it was a great little exchange we had. Excited to get going.”
Adam is entering his third full season as stated, all spent with Tri-City, and has been a physical presence on the Americans’ blue line throughout his time with the organization.
Now, with a new title and added responsibility, Adam reflected on what the Tri-Cities means to him and his optimism for the season ahead.
“Coming through the organization, seeing how things have gone, we definitely want to turn this year around. It’s a big year, and this is my home away from home now. It’s super awesome to play here, I love this spot, and I love the fans.”
As captain, Adam knows his role will extend beyond what he does on the ice. When asked what type of leader he wants to be and what he expects from his teammates, Adam pointed to his voice, physicality, and willingness to lead by example.
“I think I bring a big voice in the room, and on the ice trying to be a protector of the team, and show the boys that they play their game and I will play mine. And every night I expect everyone to bring it, and as long as we give it our all and play a full 60 minutes and everyone plays their game, I think we can win a lot of games.”
Adam says the leaders he’s played alongside throughout his career have helped shape the captain he is today.
“There’s been so many guys I have grown from and mirror my leadership too. Guys like Carter Savage, Terrell Goldsmith, Jake Sloan, and my first year Alex Serraglio. So lots of good names there to learn from, it’s been great taking what they’ve shown me and applying it to the boys now.”
Adam will now look to use those lessons to help lead a relatively young Tri-City group and push the Americans back into the playoffs.
Tri-City currently sits at 0-1-1 to begin the season, but the Americans will have an opportunity to pick up their first win Saturday night when they travel to Spokane.
