It looks like another young Canadian is set to join the ranks of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Transfermarkt’s Manuel Veth reported on Tuesday that Vancouver FC midfielder Emrick Fotsing is set to cross the Lower Mainland and join the MLS club.

Transfer fees are reported to be around $350K with add-ons, bringing the potential fee up to $500K. The intention is for Fotsing to be loaned back for Vancouver FC for the remainder of the 2026 CPL season.

The 18-year-old Canadian joined CF Montreal’s academy in 2021 before moving to Vancouver FC in February 2025 on a CPL Exceptional Young Talent roster spot. In 39 matches with Vancouver, Fotsing 39 matches over two seasons, scoring four times.

He has also been called up to the Canadian national setup, playing with the U18s last year and the U20s this year in the Concacaf U20 Championship. In the tournament, Fotsing played all five matches and scored twice.

Fotsing is one for tomorrow, not today

Do not expect Fotsing to slot into the Whitecaps lineup right away. In addition to a likely loan back to Vancouver FC, he is considered a long-term project with a high ceiling to his potential.

In comparison to former Whitecaps player Sebastian Berhalter and recent signing Aleksa Cvetković, Fotsing’s numbers are lower, representative of his lack of experience.

However, a few things pop out, particularly in defending.

At his young age, he is in the ballpark with Berhalter’s 2026 Whitecaps numbers in clearances, interceptions and blocked shots. He is also much better at holding the ball in possession, a tribute to his strength.

Fotsing has 0.6 interceptions per 90 minutes this season, compared to Berhalter’s 0.8. They are tied with 0.6 clearances. Fotsing edges Berhalter in blocked shots with 0.3 and 0.1 respectively.

While, he has not scored in this season, he does rank high among CPL midfielders over the past two years.

This identifies clear areas for improvement. Fotsing has shown an eye for goal, but he can be single-focused on the shot rather than the pass. As the scouting video shows, he tends to operate at the top of the 18-yard box when his team is in attack. This gives him good sightlines for the net as well as his teammates.

Defensively, his numbers are solid. But this in in the CPL, and comparing him to an MLS-level midfield is somewhat disingenuous (even though that’s exactly what we’re doing). But the comparison does highlight a pathway for Fotsing and a potential view of what he could become in the future.

He is a player ready to make the jump to a higher profile league but will require time to adjust.

More for the Whitecaps?

The Whitecaps have been busy in the summer transfer window, signing two players so far in Cvetković and Kwasi Poku. Fotsing would be the third.

However, rumours persist that the Whitecaps are interesting in Columbus Crew experienced midfielder, Dániel Gazdag.

With the MLS summer transfer window running until Sept. 2, longer than previous seasons, there is still time for an experienced player to come. Whitecaps’ CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster gave strong hints of an experienced player joining the club, but he did say it would be towards the end of the window.
